(2021-09-16) Big Software Companies Losing Money

Twilio (IPO 2016), Slack.com (IPO 2019, acquired 2020), Asana (IPO 2020), and Atlassian (IPO 2015) all lose money?

Or maybe they're afraid of Salesforce.com entering the market?

  • not that Salesforce gives much profit to shareholders, vs enterprise sales&marketing, and stock buybacks

Is this because of adding lots of enterprise sales costs? Custom dev work?

  • they spend more on "sales & marketing" (CAC) than software development, but you can't get a breakdown of either number.

Jan'2026:

  • Asana has recently achieved non-GAAP profitability and positive free cash flow in recent quarters (late 2024/early 2025) after years of losses, showing strong revenue growth and improving operating margins, but still reports GAAP losses
  • Atlassian still not GAAP-profitable, though positive-Free-Cash-Flow. "Choosing to re-invest."
