Kleptones: William Orbit mix - Hectic City 26! Here's a slightly unexpected new Hectic City mix...So, a couple of months back it was reported that William Orbit had died
I'd discovered his work back when I was a broke-ass music-hungry youth, trying to make my meagre record-buying budget go a bit further by keeping a keen eye on the single "bargain bins" in my local shops.
Also around that time, another increasingly-popular method to try and attract sales for a new artist was to get a "currently trendy" DJ or producer to create a remix that would catch the casual browser's eye. I can't exactly remember where I heard Mr. Orbit first, it may well have been his remix of The Shamen's "Hyperreal",
oddly, at that time there was a preponderance of new "Orb"-ishly named artists, such as Mr. Orbit, The Orb & Orbital - Indeed I bought the latter's first single (from a bargain bin, natch) thinking it must be related to either Mr. Orbit or The Orb - a very lucky purchase indeed, it turned out. Anyways, Mr. O's presence started to pop up on quite a few new singles
it wasn't long before I was snapping up anything with his name on it, opening my ears to a whole ton of new electronic music and pointing me further down many new roads, from house and techno to soundtracks, ambience and more experimental stuff
I'd presumed that there would be a flurry of tribute mixes but apart from a few playlists and a couple of radio things, I hadn't seen much, so I decided to dig through my boxes and see if I had enough for a mix, maybe a Golden Hour's worth? Turned out that was quite the understatement.... it got longer and longer, and 260 minutes later it finally wrapped round back on itself, eating its own tail, and declared itself complete, which seemed rather appropriate.
