StanfordU Shakespeare Company brings the magic in ‘The Tempest: A Radio Play’... Best enjoyed with headphones, the show is an auditory treat that cleverly juxtaposes ambient music and sound effects to bring to life the magic of Prospero’s island all within your living room. Starting off with a bang (or, more precisely, a thunderclap), the howling storm and roaring sea that assault one’s ears in the first few seconds are jarring, yes, but they introduce the listener to the immersive potential of the auditory format. Listeners are instantly thrown into the tumultuous conflict of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” (more)

Zeynep Tufekci: The CDC Is Still Repeating Its Mistakes. By issuing covid-19 recommendations that are simultaneously too timid and too complicated, the CDC is repeating a mistake that’s hounded America’s pandemic response. The new guidelines are rigid and binary, and aren’t accompanied by explanations or a link to an accessible version of the underlying science, which would empower people to both understand them better and figure things out for themselves. Tiago Forte: Progressive Summarization V: The Faster You Forget, The Faster You Learn. In Part I, I introduced Progressive Summarization, a method for easily creating highly discoverable notes. In Part II, I gave you examples and metaphors of the method in action. Part III included my top recommendations for how to perform it effectively. Part IV showed how to apply the technique to non-text media.. In Part V, I’ll show you how Progressive Summarization directly contributes to the ultimate outcome we’re seeking with our information consumption: learning. (more)

Roblox is an online computer game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation. It allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. For most of Roblox's history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and a company, due to both co-founder Baszucki's lack of interest in press coverage and it being "lost among the crowd" in a large number of platforms released around the same time. Roblox began to grow rapidly in the second half of the 2010s, and this growth has been accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8] Roblox is free-to-play, with in-game purchases available through a virtual currency called "Robux". As of August 2020, Roblox had over 164 million monthly active users, with it being played by over half of all children aged under 16 in the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roblox

Liminal Warmth: On Transgender Children and Medical Intervention (Sex And Gender). I do think there's a very real tendency for many well-intentioned people to encourage a path that they themselves have not walked, and could not imagine walking, because they believe that it will reduce the suffering of the person they're encouraging. James Bridle is Framing William Gibson's Zero History as "Network Realism": Network Realism is writing that is of and about the Network. It’s Realism because it’s so close to our present reality. A realism that posits an increasingly 1:1 relationship between Fiction and the World (Real World). A realtime link. And it’s networked because it lives in a place that’s that’s enabled by, and only recently made possible by, our technological connectedness. Zero History is Network Realism because of the way that it talks about the world, and the way its knowledge of the world is gathered and disseminated. Gibson seems to be navigating the spider graph of current reality as wikiracing does human knowledge... If I’m writing the first outline of Network Realism—a manifesto can’t be far behind—then we need some other examples...

Zvi Mowshowitz: Covid-19 4/22: Crisis in India. The United States appears to have turned the corner. Despite our determination to sabotage vaccination efforts, they have taken only minor damage, and we are starting to see declines again in the number of cases.... Other places without our access to vaccines are not as lucky, and in particular India is in crisis. Things there are worse than they’ve ever been and rapidly getting worse, with the hospitals on the verge of collapse. (more)

US Intel Walks Back Claim Russians Put Bounties on American Troops. It was a blockbuster story about Russia’s return to the imperial “Great Game” in Afghanistan. The Kremlin had spread money around the longtime central Asian battlefield for militants to kill remaining U.S. forces. It sparked a massive outcry from Democrats and their #resistance amplifiers about the treasonous Russian puppet in the White House whose admiration for Vladimir Putin had endangered American troops (more)
