Bret Victor: Ten Brighter Ideas? An Explorable Explanation. As with many areas of public interest, the common wisdom surrounding energy conservation consists of myths and legends, rules of thumb and superstitions. We're given guidelines as soundbites, catchy but insubstantial. We trust them blindly, not knowing whether our actions make any significant impact. (more)
Zvi Mowshowitz: Omicron variant Post #11. South Africa, the UK and Denmark are no longer uniquely informative places, so I’m combining all the areas into one section now.... There are a few cities where we may have peaked, but otherwise outside of South Africa? Not so much. (more)
Sasha Chapin: Inner Warfare, or, It's Ishita Arora's World and I'm Just Living in It. There is just something obstinate in me that says, no, do not do the right thing. (more)
Zvi Mowshowitz: Omicron variant Post #9. There are three major fronts. There’s the question of what is happening and how many cases we have, there’s the question of how people are reacting and will react to it, and there’s the question of severity. (more)
Zvi Mowshowitz: What's Up With the CDC Nowcast? The CDC nowcast last week was 2.7% Omicron. That seemed like a reasonable guess. (more)
Zvi Mowshowitz: Omicron variant: My Current (12/28) Model. Note that this post mostly does not justify and explain its statements. I document my thinking, sources and analysis extensively elsewhere, little of this should be new. (more)

Zvi Mowshowitz: Omicron variant Post #8. Omicron continues to take over. Official reactions have been relatively mild, with only the Netherlands entering a lockdown that I have seen. Private reaction has been more robust, which is the best way to do it (more)

Jason Kolb envisions a Personal Server which is basically an XMPP-based Proxy Server acting as an interface between a person and all the WebApp-s he uses. When you look at the network this level, you can see that the private server has another server sitting behind it which I like to call the storage server. It’s responsible for storing user data and running the guts of what the private server is actually capable of. In fact, the private server does nothing more than serve Web content and proxy requests to and from the storage server. All application logic and data storage is done on the storage server. (more)
Holden Karnovsky: Bet with Zvi Mowshowitz about Omicron variant. Zvi Mowshowitz and I have agreed to the following bet... The concept this is trying to capture is that Zvi thinks there’s a 70% chance of the following: “Omicron will blow through the US by 3/1/2022, leading to herd immunity and something like the ‘end’ of the COVID-19 pandemic.” I think there’s only a 50% chance of this (and I would’ve had a lower probability before learning that Zvi thinks it). We bet at 60%. (more)
Octopuses, lobsters, and crabs are sentient beings, says new U.K. study. The British government has announced that it will add both cephalopods (the class containing octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish) and decapods (the order with lobsters, crabs, shrimp, prawns, and crayfish) to its new animal-welfare bill, citing “strong evidence” that this group of marine invertebrates has feelings. I was using Bridgy for WebMentions for my WikiLog. But for FluxGarden users, getting set up with IndieWeb is just an extra pain. So I'm going to move toward linking to Twitter searches. I'll call this TwitterMention.
Eudaimonia (Greek: εὐδαιμονία [eu̯dai̯moníaː]; sometimes anglicized as eudaemonia or eudemonia, /juːdɪˈmoʊniə/) is a Greek word literally translating to the state or condition of 'good spirit', and which is commonly translated as 'happiness' or 'welfare'. In the works of Aristotle, eudaimonia was the term for the highest human good in older Greek tradition. It is the aim of practical philosophy, including ethics and political philosophy, to consider as well as experience what it really is, and how it can be achieved. It is thus a central concept in Aristotelian ethics and subsequent Hellenistic philosophy, along with the terms aretē (most often translated as 'virtue' or 'excellence') and phronesis" ('practical or ethical wisdom').[1] Discussion of the links between ēthikē aretē (virtue of character) and eudaimonia (happiness) is one of the central concerns of ancient ethics, and a subject of much disagreement. As a result, there are many varieties of eudaimonism. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eudaimonia See (2008-11-07) Boniwell What Is Eudaimonia? The Concept Of Eudaimonic WellBeing And Happiness,

Big History is an emerging academic discipline which examines history from the Big Bang to the present. It examines long time frames using a multidisciplinary approach based on combining numerous disciplines from science and the humanities,[1][2][3][4][5] and explores human existence in the context of this bigger picture.[6] It integrates studies of the cosmos, Earth, life and humanity using empirical evidence to explore cause-and-effect relations... the 20-year-old discipline[13] appears to be poised for further growth, including an effort to make the discipline available worldwide via a project from philanthropist Bill Gates and David Christian called the Big HistoryProject. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_History (more)
