Ultra-processed food (UPF) is an industrially formulated edible substance derived from natural food or synthesized from other organic compounds.[1][2] The resulting products are designed to be highly profitable, convenient, and hyperpalatable, often through food additives such as preservatives, colourings, and flavourings.[3] The state of research into ultra-processed foods and their effects is evolving rapidly as of 2024... Carlos Augusto Monteiro cited Michael Pollan as an influence in coining the term 'ultra-processed food' in a 2009 commentary.[13] Monteiro's team developed the Nova classification for grouping unprocessed and processed foods beginning in 2010, whose definition of ultra-processing has become most widely accepted and has gradually become more refined through successive publications.[14] The Nova classification does not comment on the nutritional value of food and can be combined with a labelling system such as Nutri-Score to provide comprehensive guidance on healthy eating... The identification of ultra-processed foods, as well as the category itself, is a subject of debate among nutrition and public health scientists, and other definitions have been proposed. A survey of systems for classifying levels of food processing in 2021 identified four 'defining themes'... Of the various systems they surveyed, the researchers found that only the Nova classification takes all four themes into account. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-processed_food (more)

Ultra-processed food exposure and adverse health outcomes: umbrella review of epidemiological meta-analyses. Ultra-processed foods, as defined using the Nova food classification system, encompass a broad range of ready to eat products, including packaged snacks, carbonated soft drinks, instant noodles, and ready-made meals. Ultra-processed foods linked to 32 health problems in review: What to know. A review of research involving almost 10 million people has found a direct association between eating too many ultra-processed foods — those breads, cereals, snacks and frozen meals that have been industrially manufactured with flavors and additives to make them more palatable — and more than 30 health conditions, including heart disease, anxiety and early death. Cognitive decline linked to ultraprocessed food, study finds. Tanzi... said the key problem with ultraprocessed foods is that "they are usually very high in sugar, salt and fat, all of which promote systemic inflammation, perhaps the most major threat to healthy aging in the body and brain. (more)

practitioner of Guerrilla Warfare; cf Punk

Guerrilla warfare is a form of unconventional warfare in which small groups of irregular military, such as rebels, partisans, paramilitary personnel or armed civilians including recruited children, use ambushes, sabotage, terrorism, raids, petty warfare or hit-and-run tactics in a rebellion, in a violent conflict, in a war or in a civil war to fight against regular military, police or rival insurgent forces.[1] Although the term "guerrilla warfare" was coined in the context of the Peninsular War in the 19th century,[2] the tactical methods of guerrilla warfare have long been in use. In the 6th century BC, Sun Tzu proposed the use of guerrilla-style tactics in The Art of War. The 3rd century BC Roman general Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus is also credited with inventing many of the tactics of guerrilla warfare through what is today called the Fabian strategy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_warfare (more)

Mark McElroy: A Metaphysican Looks at Algorithms of Thought. I enjoyed Cortex Futura’s latest post on algorithms of thought (2020-11-27 CortexFutureTrueAlgorithmsOfThoughtHaveArrived). In reflecting on the role algorithms of thought have played in my own life and work, I’d agree that new technologies for sharing algorithms of thought have arrived (especially with the advent of Roam Research). But the algorithms of thought themselves — and ways to share them — have actually been around for quite some time. (more)

Venkatesh Rao: How to Not Lose at 4d Chess: The idea of 4d chess turned into a popular meme with Donald Trump's victory in 2016 (helped along by narratives like the breathless Master Persuader one peddled by Scott Adams)....insight from theoretical computer science suggests that 4d chess ought to be simpler than 2d. I went "Doh!" because that insight (which I'll explain in a minute) was one of my favorite ideas (and go-to hacks) from grad school, and I had failed to connect the dots. Then I did a double take: wait, did that really take care of the idea? (more)

What If Ice Cream Is Actually Good for You? Back in 2018, a Harvard doctoral student named Andres Ardisson Korat was presenting his research on the relationship between dairy foods and chronic disease to his thesis committee. One of his studies had led him to an unusual conclusion: Among diabetics, eating half a cup of ice cream a day was associated with a lower risk of heart problems (more)
