Collective Action

Collective action is traditionally defined as any action aiming to improve the group’s conditions (such as status or power), which is enacted by a representative of the group.

The collective action theory was first published by Mancur Olson in 1965. He argues that any group of individuals attempting to provide a public good has got troubles to do so efficiently. On the one hand individuals have got incentives to "free-ride" on the efforts of others in certain groups and on the other hand the size of a group is of high importance and difficult to optimally determine.
