Homeless

a sub-group is the StreetHomeless, who don't/won't stay in shelters

Apparently we don't even know (2005) what the homeless population is in NYC, but around 38,000 people sleep in shelters per night.

Mar'2009: arguing about the national child-homeless number. A well publicized report this week that an estimated 1.5 million American children experienced homelessness in 2005-06 did not use the federal definition of homelessness. Instead, it used a different definition that grossly inflated the actual number.

Over the course of the year (October 2009 – September 2010), the 2010 Annual Homeless Assessment Report found that 1,593,150 individuals experienced homelessness.[277][278] Most were homeless temporarily. The chronically homeless population, those with repeated episodes or who have been homeless for long periods, decreased from 175,914 in 2005 to 123,833 in 2007. So,

  • the chronic group is 10% of the count you generally hear.
  • out of 309M US population in 2010, 175 is 0.056%
