Anti-Authoritarian High Modernism, anti-Scientism
My take: post-rat says "definitely consider science/rationality as a method/constraint, but..."
- you might be solving the wrong problem
- you might be asking the wrong question
- you might be making an unreasonable "demand for rigor" ((2014-08-14) Alexander Beware Isolated Demands For Rigor)
- agrees with the Bayesian model, but generally suspects the inputs are fake enough that the calculations are meaningless (decision rationalizing)
- the simplest thing might be to follow a heuristic or tacit knowledge or gut/taste/pattern common sense ((2012-09-01) Swartz Optimal Biases To Overcome)
- sometimes an irrational process (woo/tarot) can "inspire" you to a high-quality decision/action
A post-rationalist is someone who believes the rationalist project is misguided or impossible, but who likes to use some of the tools and concepts developed by the rationalists.
This is another observer tribe, and possibly the most interesting one. If the rationalist motto is “the map is not the territory, but it is important to create the most accurate map possible”, then the post-rationalist motto is “the canvas is not the territory, but it is important to create the most interesting canvas possible.” (Interestingness) This observer tribe has the potential to generate innovative solutions to the seemingly intractable problem of the differend. Sarah Perry, 2015: Post-rationalists tend to value true beliefs, but have more sympathy for religion, ritual, and tradition (including monogamy) than the rationalist community. They are skeptical of the ability of science (as it is practiced) to solve humanity’s problems and provide a sense of meaning or happiness. I am sympathetic to both groups. I view post-rationality as a kind of hyper-rationality: a concern with truth, efficacy, meaning, and human experience that is willing to be skeptical of even the foundational beliefs of the rationalist worldview.
- I think this sympathy is a sign of the NeoTrad thrashing/failure of some of their members
eigenrobot: rationalism was in a sense about saving the world; postrationalism in a sense about understanding it
